Is it worth trying to sell paintings at the car boot sale?

To date I've only sold my paintings on eBay and frankly, as with anything else you try and sell on eBay, you only get the bare minimum price for anything.  At a car boot I thought if I sold them unframed to keep the price down, and just had them in mounts then I might just get enough cash to make it worthwhile.

Anyway, with the summer fast approaching and the blue skies hopefully here to stay I may just give it a bash and see what happens.

This watercolour I made up as I went along.  To be honest, I made a complete hash of the original sky and so rewet it and started again.  It's meant to represent somewhere in the Lake District though really could be anywhere.

Considering the sky was reworked I think it has turned out very well. It looks very dramatic.
I think it would certainly be worth trying a car-boot sale. People are more likely to buy if they can see what they are getting. It's nice to get some feedback too.
I don't know whether you have any craft fairs in your area, but they are another possibility. A table usually costs £10 or £15 and people are going there to buy arts and crafts.

You probably know already, but you can get clear plastic bags for displaying mounted artwork.

Thanks for that Keith. I'm definitely going to give it a go at some stage this summer. Fingers crossed for some good sales!

Lovely painting! You're right about eBay. Selling paintings direct does pay better, but oh, the work. I've pretty much given it up for online sales.

A lovely sky and very dramatic. Sometimes it is OK to rework a watercolour sky and your sky is a fine example of one that is very successful.
Do try the craft fairs Steven I think your work would do very well there. Maybe ask a picture framer to display one of your mounted watercolour paintings in his window on a wee easel I am sure that would get your work seen by a lot of people interested in buying a painting. When you gain confidence then you can approach a small gallery and ask them if there is a buying market for watercolour paintings in their gallery. I believe it is just a question of finding the right venue. You could also try libraries and museums they often have exhibition areas and you could apply for a grant from the arts council to help towards the payment of frames. There are companies that supply very reasonably priced mounts and frames to trade that will cut your costs. High Street Framers can be terribly expensive. Good luck.

Hi Caroline
Thanks for the comments. I’m still shy when it comes to approaching galleries. I do feel though that my paintings are improving as well as my confidence. I’m waiting until I get a batch of local paintings that I’m happy with and then I’ll approach some galleries by me. I did try a craft fair last year but had very little success. I had lots of compliments but very little cash changed hands. I’ll just keep practising. Best of luck.
Regards, Steven.
