We were lucky enough to get free tickets for Drayton Manor Park recently and so last Sunday off we set for a day of fun and frolics. I used to love the white-knuckle rides but these days tend to steer well clear.
Late afternoon duly arrived and whilst crossing the small bridge to the car park I was greeted by this delightful view of the river that borders the park and zoo. I took a photograph and then painted it in watercolour when I got home.
I used to think inspiration could only come from glorious vistas such as the Lake District and similar. I'm slowly beginning to realise that potential painting subjects are all around us regardless of where we live.

Well done Steven. I'll bet it felt good to be doing your own composition.
I hope you don't mind me saying that I would have dropped the bridge down a bit, so that it wasn't in the middle of the painting. You could just crop the bottom a bit if you're not committed to a frame size.
Hi Keith, it felt very good to be doing my own composition. It's difficult to emerge from the comfort zone and show some faith in your own ability.
Instinctively I'm drawn towards mountains and lakes and to be honest it's a bit of a struggle to focus on local scenes when I know full well there's nothing like that within 100 miles of where I live.
But I'll keep ploughing on and hopefully one day everything will fall into place.
Thanks for your continued encouragement, maybe one day I'll be able to make a living from it like so many other bloggers on this network.
Cheers, Steven.
I can understand how you feel. I like mountains too. I'm lucky to have the coast and moors which are different sorts of wild places, so I can imagine how frustrating it must be in a city.
Perhaps you can do a combination of mountains from photographs and local scenes from life. I think you will develop your own style quicker working on the local subjects.
I love painting and I find it extremely satisfying. I have however taken time off to renovate my house. With thew advent of retirement I think I will start up my painting again. I do love your style of painting. Great work!
Thanks Scott for your kind words. Best of luck with your house and your painting.
