Winter in Phoenix Park, Dublin 8 x 6 inches Oil Painting

This is a loose impression of Phoenix Park in Dublin painted from a photograph kindly offered to me by Pete Rudden.  It's been all watercolours since the turn of the year so it was nice to get back to oils.  Anyone got any tips on photographing wet oil paintings?  I'm still struggling with the light reflecting off the paint.  I've seen other bloggers upload decent images of fresh oil paintings so it must be possible.  All paintings are at http://www.stevencronin.com

Hi Steven. I take all my photographs of my oil paintings outside in the garden. Like that you can control the way the light falls onto the canvas. I also tilt the canvas down slightly on the standing easel I am using. Take a white balance reading, though I often forget to do that. Also turn off the flash as that will effect how much shine you get too in the end photo. If you use a programme like Photoshop you can alter the levels and add warmth if the light which in winter can be really blue or dull yellow or course depending on where you live. I took some photos of my oil paintings on Christmas eve up here in my garden in the highlands of Scotland. I thought that the light from the snow would help create more light but even at 11am the light was so dull. If you take your photos of your oil paintings outside do watch for how the light is that day as it will make a big difference as to how the photo will turn out.
Nice painting by the way.

Thanks Caroline for the information. It is very much appreciated. I'll try it next time and see how I get on. Happy painting!
