Hi Steven, it is hard to imagine how small this painting really is. I can see this as an 18 x 24 inch painting. It is interesting to notice how the size of the painting gives us a completely different feeling when viewing. I noticed the other day when painting what is small to me and that is a 10 x 14 inch oil. For some reason had it been on the 18 x 24 inch canvas it would have been so much better. I sometimes think that you need more detail in a small work than in a larger painting. The limited palette really is nice in your painting of Thirlmere in the Lake District, I just love that white light by the trees. The atmosphere is really nice too. My favourite of all of your oil paintings. It almost has the loose style that you are so good at with the watercolours and I believe is very much your natural style of painting. There is so nice detail in the trees too.
Hi Caroline Thanks for all the kind words. I started in oils last summer on 20” x 16” canvases and I am slowly getting used to the smaller format. The reason for going smaller was because I bought a pochade box to take 8” x 6” canvas boards to encourage me to paint outside. I’m still painting from photos but hope to do a bit of plein air this year. Will you be putting any of your paintings on blogger?
Hi Steve, I think your style of loose watercolour painting would be really suitable for out doors work. Though watch out for insects landing on your wet paintings! The choice of subject too is important for very small works. A favourite forum of mine is WetCanvas they have a minature painting forum and it is incredible just how small works can be. If you click on my name you will go to my blogger page and I have recently added my website so you can see my work there. Through navigating your way in the website you will find watercolours and prints of my watercolours. I would love to add my favourite blogs to my blog page but I don't know how to do that. But I did manage to add my website last week.
Hi Caroline I looked at your website and was very impressed, some fantastic skies. As for adding your favourite blogs, go to your dashboard, click layout, click 'Add a gadget' and then choose 'Blog List'. You can then select from the blogs you follow which ones you want displayed on your blog page.
Hi Steven I have followed your instructions and I hope you will be able to view my dashboard and see the blogs I follow. You know the profile page, how do I get that to show blogs I follow? another concern is that I clicked on the 'share' button amd it showed another person's blog that I don't know! Thank you for your help! glad you liked the skies and thanks for visiting my website.
Hello again! Just to say I managed to get a blog page up with some works in progress and also added a few blogs to my list of blogs! Thank you so much for the suggestion, it really inspired me to get my works in progress up and running. Let me know what you think if you get the chance.
Looks very professional Caroline. Lovely paintings. Regarding publishing books, I don't know if you're interested but I've found a cracking website that does it at www.blurb.com Best of luck with your blog.
Hi Steven. Thank you for the link for the book publishing it looks fascinating, do you think you will go for it? The only problem I am having with the blog is that my friends and artists pals are emailing me to say how great it is but are not putting anything in the comment!! do you find that common? How do I notify interested folk in when there is a new addition to my blog? I gather I will get my blog on the google listing page when I type my name into the google search engines?
Hi Caroline I am going to have a go at a book. I’m about to order one with just my holiday snaps in it for the family. Can’t wait to see what it looks like. Unfortunately comments are few and far between in my experience. As for notifying folk of new posts, once they’ve clicked on your ‘Follow’ link, all your new posts will show up on their dashboard. Regarding search engines, you don’t have to do anything as far as I know. Google will find your blog when it does one of its regular trawls of the internet. Best of luck!
Hi Caroline For my first book I’ve decided to do a tutorial. ‘Oil Painting Step-by-Step’ will be my publishing debut! I finished one painting last night of which I took over 30 photos at regular intervals. Today I’ll start putting them in the book with accompanying text. I can’t wait to see what it looks like! Regarding the holiday snaps, I’ll post a photo of my first paperback photo album when it arrives in about a week. Regards, Steven.
Have you done a book on the watercolour painting Steven? It will be interesting to read about your oil painting techniques. Were you influenced by anyone regarding style and technique? I think it is important to take some time out mentally to simply have a quiet time and to write down what are the best techniques that are useful to you as an artist. When I started the watercolour painting workshops they were very structured and looking back they brought out the best work in my students. After eight weeks I let them bring in their own projects but many resorted to painting in almost an illustration style with a very small brush! a tutor's nightmare! I want to do a oil painting workshop and in order to do that I want to write my own wee manual to just see how I can simplify the painting process and to also see how much I have learnt over the years. I just love glazes and you can glaze with watercolour too, to warm or cool an area or indeed to add unity to an area. I really hope the book goes well Steven, Good luck!
I’m part-way through my first book ‘Oil Painting Step-by-Step’. It’s a very simple format, a series of black and white photographs with descriptions following the last painting I did from start to finish. I’ve gone for the 8” x 5” paperback size to keep publishing costs as low as possible and to give myself a chance of actually selling a few. If successful, I may go for the glossy stuff at a later date.
I’m going to do a watercolour book next using the same format. I get a reasonable number of people watching my videos at my watercolour workshop channel on YouTube and feel this would be a good place to start promoting.
My oil painting has a huge Bob Ross influence. He makes the process so simple. I just don’t have the patience for intricate, detailed work. I never spend much more than 30-40 minutes on a painting.
