I kept the colours to a minimum for this watercolour of Eilean Donan Castle using just Raw Sienna, Ultramarine Blue and Payne's Gray. I was eager to preserve the lighter area running through the centre of the painting to help create a little drama.
This blog's been inaccessible the last few days because I've changed the web address to www.MyWatercolourDiary.com to tie in with the launch of the book of the same name. It takes Google a maximum of 3 days (or so they said) to change web addresses, though it's been slightly longer than that!
If this new book is successful, I'd like to produce a series of My Watercolour Diary books. The black and white format allows me to sell them at what I think is a reasonable price of £4.95 plus p&p. Personally, I think the paintings look OK in b/w. In saying that, I've always liked b/w pictures but can appreciate others may feel differently.
I've started painting now without doing any preliminary sketching and find it quite liberating. It really suits my impatience as I like to get the paint on the paper as quickly as possible.

Good luck with the book Steven.
I like the dramatic light in this one. The castle doesn't look quite right to me: I think perhaps the tower should have been a bit taller.
Going straight into the painting, without a preliminary sketch, is definitely liberating. It is risky, but when it works it can produce some good paintings.
Thanks Keith. I was aware at the time that I'd made a mistake when painting the castle but rather than fiddling and making it worse I decided to just leave it alone.
I'm still waiting for my own copy of the book to arrive. I'm rather keen to see what it looks like!
now I do like this one, such a wonderfully understated painting and the light shown by the painting is incredible
Thanks John for your kind words. Hope the art group is going strong. Keep strummin' that guitar!
